For hundreds of years, water rehabilitation has been used as a form of therapy by traditional healers. The medicinal use of water, referred to as hydrotherapy, can be used for conditions like muscle pain, injury or recovery after surgery. People who are on the mend after a strain, sprain or hospital stay can work their way back to wellness through water exercise. The buoyancy of water minimizes the impact exercise has on the body and is a safe and effective solution for a number of ailments.

Process

Water therapy is typically done in three parts: the warm up, stretching or toning and the cool down. Therapists enter the pool alongside patients and aid in assistive movements as they instruct the proper techniques. The warm up consists of a combination of various cardiovascular exercises. Depending on the type of session, warm ups may include swimming laps. Water strength exercises are ideal for targeting certain areas of the body, such as the hips, quadriceps, back, arms, shoulders or abs. Warm ups should take only a few minutes before moving onto the stretching or toning part of the session.

Benefits

Water has been proven effective as a treatment for pain. Ice packs constrict blood vessels, thus decreasing swelling and pain from everything from a sports injury to bad headache. Hot tubs are often used to facilitate relaxation, reduce pain from muscle soreness and can be used for active persons of all physical levels and ages. Water therapy speeds up the healing process and allows the injured person to maintain his/her fitness levels without having to try and put their full weight on an injured leg, foot or other part of the body. Taking the time to relax in a heated bath at home is also beneficial.

Significance

Studies have shown that pain and muscle spasms in an injured area are reduced when the temperature of the water reaches 90 to 95 degrees. When pain and swelling is reduced, the body is able to relax and heal more quickly. Hot tubs set to this temperature are ideal for enhancing range of motion and promoting pain relief. Pools and other bodies of water accommodate both shorter and taller patients and provide sufficient room for the proper execution of exercises.

Costs

Water rehabilitation can range from an affordable $50 to the higher-priced $250 for a 45-minute therapy session. Cost will depend on several factors, including the type of session options selected and whether the session is a private or group lesson. In some cases, an insurance company may pay for part or all of the cost related to the water rehabilitation sessions. It’s important to speak with the insurance provider before starting therapy to ensure the cost is covered. Thankfully, aquatic therapy first appeared as a CPT code in 1995, increasing the chance it will be at least partially taken care of by a patient’s particular insurance company.

Water rehabilitation can be used to improve overall fitness and speed up healing of various conditions and injuries, especially for persons anxious to get back to their workouts or the playing field. Patients in need of water rehabilitation should consult their doctor to find treatment options at a local hospital, long-term health facility or gym.

A healthy body holds a healthy mind. So, unless your body is in perfect order, you cannot have peaceful mind. Again, if your mind is not clear and calm, your healthy body will not benefit you in any way. So, you have to keep them both in the best working order.

With our life becoming more and more hectic, conditions like stress and tension are becoming our most faithful friends, unwilling to leave us no matter what. But they make our body weak and vulnerable to the attacks of other ailments like hypertension, high blood pressure, diabetes, etc. So, people are trying to find ways and means to cure it with easy and safe methods. This is where meditation comes in.

It is one of the popular ancient knowledge of the east that became popular in the West during the 1950s when people were looking for an alternative for the pills. Science explained the importance and the function of meditation which we had relegated to the realm of superstition due to ignorance. Now that we have embraced it, we are finding its benefits in the various spheres of our life. Some of them are discussed below.

Weight loss
This is usually at the top of our to-do list. But somehow we never seem to find the time to go to the gym, or for walks. Meditation can help you here. All you need are 10-15 minutes depending on the meditation techniques you are following. You can shed those extra pounds simply by regulating your breathing. Lie on your back comfortably and try to bring down your breathing rate to 12 per minutes. You also have to develop a very positive attitude and believe that you can achieve your goal.

Fitness
Everyone, irrespective of the age and the stage of life they are at, strive to become fit. Here also meditation proves helpful. There are several meditational techniques that can help you in toning your muscles and tendons making you more flexible and fit. There are many meditation techniques for beginners as well which will help them gain a fitter body.

Nutrition
Meditation helps in increasing the amount of oxygen intake. This in turn helps the other organs to function in a better manner. It also helps in the digestion process. Eating healthy food is not enough to have a healthy body. The body also needs to absorb the nutrients. This is facilitated by meditation. It also cleanses your system of the toxins and the damaging components and yields massive health benefits.

Sports
Sports enthusiasts need to have a fit and active body. For this they can take the help of the different meditation techniques that help in keeping the body fit. Also, it will increase their reflexes which are very important for players. Meditation almost always helps in the flow of energy through the body and the mind and improves the balance. Concentration is another important thing that the players need to have. It is impossible to hit the target if you are not concentrating. Meditation also helps you to improve concentration and assure success.

Author Bio:
The author Olivia Thompson writes several blogs and articles on health and how to have a good physique. She tells us how we can improve our physique through simple meditation techniques without going to the gym and also talks about how it can help even the beginners in the improvement of the different aspects of their life simply by focusing on the breathing.

Bodybuilding is notorious for utilizing explosive anaerobic exercises. Most people and many professionals feel that cardio does not go with putting on size or bodybuilding.

The truth is, while they are both quite opposites, yet they also need each other. In order to be a true bodybuilder, you must involve enough anaerobic exercise to gain size and put on significant muscle. At the same time, however, you must burn enough calories to stay lean with a low fat percentage. This is where cardio comes into play.

Cardio is arguably the most effective calorie burner. If you need to burn a lot of calories either over time, or in a quick time slot, then cardio is your best option. You can use an elliptical machine (a great low impact option for bad joints), spin bike, or simply walk at an incline on a treadmill (many bodybuilders prefer this method as it limits muscle atrophy), the mode does not matter much.

If you are a bodybuilder, then you are purely looking to burn calories in bulk, with limited muscle loss. High intensity interval training is also a good method of burning calories, as is cross training. These methods are ways of accomplishing your calorie burning tasks while keeping the mind interested and focused on the exercise you are doing. Cross training is crucial for fighting off a fitness plateau.

Once you have hit a plateau in your training (and subsequently with your results) it can feel like failure. It can feel like it is time to give up. There is certainly a time to rest, recharge, reevaluate your training and eventually get back to your exercise, but never a time to give up.

The aforementioned steps are a great way to gather your thoughts, get back to training and launch off the exercise plateau that you are on. Once you are back in the gym (or wherever you exercise), then you can try on different modes and techniques like cross training, plyometrics, or heavier lifting.

Bodybuilding is more about consistency then worrying about plateaus. Everyone gets stuck in a rut sooner or later, but more often than not, consistency is the thing that keeps you moving forward.

Sure, you should keep pushing yourself to new levels of fitness and mass building (if you are a bodybuilder), but if you stay consistent and don’t give in to those negative thoughts — you will realize just how far you have come. Stay consistent, push your limits, but also make sure to stop and smell the roses (had to end with a cliché).

During the last century, technology surrounding us has developed at a huge pace. As a
result many things have become automated, the use of cars, home delivery
services and long workdays have all contributed to the reduction of physical
activities, which were a part of your everyday routine. It is crucial for your
health and well-being to participate in sport activities at least 2-3 times a
week. One of the best choices you can make is to visit a swimming pool and swim
a few laps every other day.

When compared to other sports, swimming offers numerous advantages that others
don’t. The most important is it’s affect on the heart, it provides
unparalleled cardiovascular conditioning which results in a rise of life
expectancy.

When swimming you use over two thirds of the bodies musculature, so it enables
you to strengthen numerous muscles at the same time. In contrary to
weightlifting, swimming helps build lean muscles if this may be your goal. The
buoyancy of the water counteracts gravity, minimizing pressure on bones and
joints. Swimming also helps strengthen joints and improves posture, this is the
reason it is frequently recommended to those suffering from backaches.

The different strokes all involve a stretching movement, and if performed in
hot water, then this will enable your muscles to relax, thus increasing
flexibility and allowing them to stretch. The result of such “swimmer
muscles” is that metabolism is boosted and your system can burn calories
for a longer period of time, after a workout. Which brings us to another very
important fact, weight loss. If you manage to push yourself a bit and you
finish a workout out of breath and with a high pulse you should be on the right
track in loosing excess pounds.

If you choose swimming as your routine physical action, then don’t forget about
safety. It’s very important to be careful around the pool, because the water
can create slippery surfaces, which can lead to fatal accidents. Also never
forget the importance of a pool safety fence, which will not only help to keep
unwanted guests away from the pool, but can also save the lives of children. A
properly chosen and installed pool gate will help keep unsupervised children
away from the pool, therefore preventing accidents.

For those who love running and love doing so for long distances, cadence is a vital aspect involved. A select group of runners have the ability to run without music, but for rest of us, we need the music directly in our ears — loud and on pace. Luckily for us, there are several ways to sync the beat of your playlist to the speed you want to go/maintain.

Syncing Yourself to The Music

If your running pace is too fast, or unusually slow compared to the song you are listening to, it can throw your entire workout off. The goal of syncing your workout playlist to your running pace is to find the perfect groove with both, the music and your strides. By no means, is this an easy feat, if the beats per minute (BPM) are too fast, then you are likely to tire out before running the desired distance. If the BPM are too slow, then your run will undoubtedly suffer and consequently, so will your results. At times, this can seem like a never-ending toggling match.

Try Your Music Out

Before you set out on a long run and potentially waste your time with a playlist that messes with your workout, test it out on a treadmill or elliptical machine. You can set these machines to a speed that won’t let you lag and make sure your cadence is in tune with the music. Once the rhythm and your cadence are synced perfectly, you can take to the pavement with your new training technique. At any point in your training, if you find yourself becoming detached from the songs on your playlist, don’t be afraid to try a new set of songs. In fact, this is great for keeping the mind interested and focused.

Picking the Right Music

If you are having trouble picking the right music for your running pace, there’s an app for that. These days, it seems as though there is an app for just about everything and many are bogus. However, Tangerine is an app that works quite well. It essentially evaluates your entire iTunes library to find the songs with high BPM. It also evaluates the intensity of the beats. This tactic isolates the best work out songs.

Syncing to your BPM

Once Tangerine has shown you the best workout songs, then you can test them out. You can also use several websites to figure what BPM you should be running at. With the help of these websites and the Tangerine app, you should notice a significant improvement in your workouts and alter your workout playlist for future goals/results.

The main reason that people exercise, is to lose weight. In order to lose weight, you must burn more calories than you eat each day. Here are five of, what I think, are the best calorie burning exercises out there:

1. Swimming
This exercise is at the top of my list for a reason. Swimming is a great cardio that works more than just your legs; it works your whole body. Having to hold your breath and not waste it will improve your lung capacity, as well as endurance. It’s not just good for cardiovascular reasons either; it helps improve your flexibility, and your overall coordination. The health benefits of swimming are almost innumerable. Swimming is probably the best thing you could do for your body if you are overweight, or even just wanting to lose a few pounds. It’s low-impact, meaning less harmful on the joints, and burns those calories away like it’s nothing!

2. Running
Running/jogging is, of course, the most popular exercise for losing weight and burning calories. This, too, has many health benefits. It’s a nice, go at your own pace exercise. One problem running is how high-impact it is on your joints. By the constant pounding you make on the ground each step, it takes quite a toll on your knees and may cause permanent damage. With advances in modern technology, treadmill companies are knocking out some of the negative effects of running, and also increasing your capabilities with running. Take incline trainers for example, running on an incline can increase the amount of calories you burn by a large margin. Treadmill companies are now making their machines with built-in shock absorbing technology to make it a lesser-impact exercise.

3. Cycling
Riding your bike is probably a lot more fun than running, right? Cycling is good exercise as well. While you may not get as much of a workout from cycling as you do from running or swimming, you can also exercise for much longer with a bicycle. You probably won’t burn as many calories in the same amount of time as running; you are able to go for a lot longer time and distance to burn more calories. Cycling is pretty low-impact but you may still experience effects from the constant use of your knees. Planning challenging routes that go up hills, on dirt paths, etc. will increase your calorie burn by a large margin.

4. Zumba
Zumba is a pretty big and groundbreaking thing. As it turns out, constantly moving at a fast pace will burn a lot of calories! Yeah this one is a no-brainer. But, honestly, are you ever going to do all of these crazy things in your living room? That’s what is so great about the Zumba program. They put you in a room with tons of other people so that if you are slacking, it makes you feel like an idiot for not doing what everybody else is doing. I would say that is some pretty good motivation. Zumba is designed to make you get up and move your whole body at a constant and fairly rapid pace.

5. Jumping Rope
I know, it sounds girly and childish. I’m sure that the last time most of you saw a jump rope was back in elementary school. The truth is that this is one kick-butt exercise that will whip you into shape. It requires you to use a lot of coordination and timing. You are basically doing a calf-burnout workout, but actually following through with the jumping motion, multiple times. If you become really good at it, you can start doing double-unders and that will surely increase the amount of calories burned. Watch the movie Rocky III for motivation with this!

Well, those are the greatest calorie burning workouts that I know of. Focus on one, or combine them all into an ultimate routine and start shedding the pounds! See MayoClinic for more information about metabolism and burning calories.

While it might sound a bit far-fetched, it isn’t. Having a reminder of fitness in the home, such as a cross trainer and using it can alter both your future and that of future generations. Of course, the alteration of your future comes from the increased activity and exercise you get using equipment. However, it also changes the lives of your children and even their children.

The Benefits of Staying Fit and Exercising

Most people understand that keeping active is important to their health. However, many don’t realize just how important it is. Some statistics show that people who don’t exercise actually increase their chances of illness and early death far more than it would if they smoked. While quitting smoking is difficult, beginning a simple exercise regimen is actually easier if you do it in increments and exercise every time you have a few moments.

Exercise also increases your metabolism. That means it increases the number of calories you burn even when you aren’t exercising. Exercise also improves your mood by producing endorphins that give you a natural high. Exercise can increase your ability to focus and stay mentally alert. Daily exercise can also help you get a good night’s rest. When people age, they often don’t sleep well at night and one of the reasons is a lack of exercise. Of course, a good night’s sleep helps you in all areas of your life.

Just losing a few pounds from exercising can make a remarkable change in your attitude and family life. When you feel good about yourself, everything goes smoother. You treat your family better, not by spoiling them, but by showing them more affection and an improved attitude. You also find that you’re friendlier at the office, which in turn makes your job go better too.

Increased Productivity

Not only will you find yourself friendlier at the office, you’ll also find that your productivity increases when you exercise. You don’t have to be overweight to be out of shape and reap the benefits of increasing your daily exercise. In fact, some businesses encourage exercise by offering gym memberships or having a company gym facility for employees to use. That’s because statistics show that employees are more productive and absenteeism due to health issues diminish with a regular program of exercise.

Some people purchase exercise bikes or treadmills for their office. These busy executives often know there are not enough minutes in the day to sneak to the gym, so they exercise when they can at their convenience. They know that it takes more time to go to another facility than it does to bring a set of exercise clothes to the office. Other people with a busy lifestyle often have bikes and/or other exercise machines in their home so they can start off their day right by getting their blood flowing and heart pumping and have a more productive day.

Reasons Exercise Programs Fail

While there are a number of memberships to gyms sold every year, there are far fewer who use those memberships. That’s because finding the time and taking the initiative to drive across town to exercise are difficult tasks. It’s far easier to forget, since out of sight, out of mind is often the route most people take. Of course, most people have a successful two week exercise regimen that ends the same way, going to the gym becomes an every other week activity that eventually disappears.

A busy schedule and lack of time is one of the reasons that exercise programs often fail. Of course, the other is personal motivation. Even exercising 20 minutes or 30 minutes every other day will make you far healthier than if you simply sat and watched television. However, if you purchase a membership to a gym, often it takes far longer than a few minutes to exercise. You have to get to the gym, change your clothes, then work out and finally change and drive home. Even a one-way 10-minute drive time can dig deep into your schedule. It could be the time used to exercise if you had an exercise machine in your home.

The At Home Solution

You can add an elliptical bike, rowing machine or other type of cross training equipment to your home. This can increase the chance of you continuing your exercise program and really making a difference in your life and your health. Frequently these machines cost about the same as a gym membership but you have the advantage of being able to sell the machine or trade it in when you want to get a new one. Something you can’t do if you want to change gyms. You also have the advantage of having the exercise equipment available for your family. This is something that can change your child’s future.

Children Follow Your Example

Children often mimic your behavior. If you smoke, many times, they end up smoking. If you eat too much, they’ll ask for seconds and thirds at the dinner table. If you exercise and eat healthy foods, they also do the same. The type of food you serve on the dinner table is the food they become accustomed to and it makes sense that it’s the food they find the most appealing. Using exercise equipment can become one of the hallmarks of becoming an adult if your child sees you exercising.

In fact, you can increase the chances of your child exercising by limiting their use of the machine to specific times when you’re available to watch. While it’s a good idea for safety’s sake, it’s also an act of reverse psychology equating exercise with growing up and creating a lifelong respect for exercise and fitness. You’ll be doing your child a favor and teaching them lifelong habits that can make the difference in their health in later years. This simple act of exercising at home will not only change your future, but also change your child’s by instilling a healthy attitude toward exercise.

Running is one of the best ways to get exercise and can be accomplished outdoors or right in your living room. Using treadmills provides a great workout because you can maintain a set speed, adjust the incline of the ramp and easily track your progress. Running indoors is also great for avoiding inclement weather and the potential danger of navigating city streets and traffic. Before you start your treadmill workout, learn a few of the most important safety tips to protect yourself while you run.

1. Use the safety strap

Running on a treadmill comes with an adjustment period, especially if you’re used to the feel of pavement beneath your feet. One thing to keep in mind is the treadmill’s continually-moving belt, even if you lose your balance and stumble. Thankfully, most machines have a built-in safety strap. Clip one end to your clothing; the other end is magnetically attached to the machine. If you lose your footing, the strap stays attached to your clothing and pulls off the magnetic sensor, which turns the machine off. Even if you are an experienced runner, using the safety strap every time you run can help prevent injuries.

2. Mount and dismount from the sides

The most dangerous time on a treadmill is when you step on and off the belt. Rather than starting or stopping the treadmill while you are standing on it, use the footpads on either side of the machine. Set the treadmill to your desired speed and hold onto the handrails as you place one foot on the belt to get acclimated, falling in stride with your other foot. When your workout is complete, use the handrails to support you as you move to the footpads before turning off the treadmill.

3. Don’t carry weights

Although you may think that carrying weights when you run will help you get a better workout, they are a major safety concern. Weights shift your center of gravity and can significantly throw off your balance. Keep your hands free when walking or running on the treadmill and adjust the incline of the machine or increase the speed of the belt to get a better workout. For a variety of exercises you can do with free weights on days when you don’t exercise on your treadmill, try these suggestions .

4. Look straight ahead

Many people experience dizziness when they run on treadmills, especially as they get used to the sensation of running in place. Rather than looking down at your feet, which can be tempting if you are trying to figure out the right position on the belt based on your stride length, look straight ahead while you run. Choosing a focal point in the distance can help you maintain stability.

Even experienced treadmill users sometimes forget these safety tips or get lazy because they have used the machine so frequently. It is important, however, to continue using best practices every time you exercise on a treadmill to protect yourself from injuries. In addition, pay extra attention whenever you use a particular machine for the first time, due to variances in performance and features.
